Surprise surprise! The book is entirely told in a bad-ass alpha hero point of view! Squee! K.A has her way with words especially with her heroes, hence reading this book brought so much more action and gave so much more intensity that we got to peek inside our hero's thrilling mind.
One word to describe Tanner Layne - HERO, not only being the principal male character to the story, but a person who have done noble acts to help someone (or in this case everyone he knows) in need. He is an ex-cop turned private investigator who seek justice to give fairness to those treated unfairly. He is definitely a bad-ass alpha hero in action yet when it comes to his heroine, he is totally sweet and protective.
Sometimes women are just so stubborn. Admit it, we kept sticking our noses to something we shouldn't but we still do, and so our heroine. I admire her courage, she is even willing to be a bait on a dangerous mission just to resolve the situation and just to help others in need. But I find it difficult to support her crazy ideas. It seems like she acts without even thinking the consequences it would bring on her. She is putting herself in harms way. I truly understand her reason, but I'm totally against her ideas.
Layne's smooth moves and lame ideas in making Rocky pretend to be his woman and to have her protected against her crazy ideas is so adorable and Rocky is totally buying it. They may be pretending but their actions speaks for themselves. They are still totally attracted with each other.
Knowing that Rocky left Layne in the past when everything between them is good, romance is over flowing, and they seemed to be inseparable but all of a sudden she left our hero hanging, broke his heart with no explanations at all, that it reminded me of Feb and Colt's story in For You where Feb also left Colt without telling him the reason behind it. But other than that, everything else is totally different.
Learning Rocky's reason for doing so is so heart-breaking, gut wrenching and extremely troublesome. Knowing that her father and brother knew everything and yet they did not made any actions on it, really saddens and disappoints me. I felt like her family should have a very acceptable reason. I just felt that their reason for keeping her's to Layne is not enough.
Having Layne as the hero, surely will have some woman on his past. But when I read the scene where the past meet the present, it is saddening. It hurts to see a woman chose to break her heart just to see the man he loves to be happy. It may be a sad scene, but the reason for having that scene and the realization that came with it is really good. Everyone should know when to step back and know ahead that it is not a fight worth fighting. So easy to tell, yet so hard to do, but once done, the path may not be easy but the end point will be worth it. So rather than waste time, end the game ahead.
There are a lot of happenings, I get pissed and emotionally attached, there are a lot of injustice. Crimes are everywhere, I had several thoughts, I got several maybe's but the story is really long, I can't wait to know where the story is really heading. There are a lot of happenings, and I can't seem to focus on the main story. Since this novel is relatively long, I had quite a hard time finishing the book. There are a lot of unanswered questions in my mind so I'm curious that made me continue reading the story.
" You're skatin' on thin ice, boy, and you better be careful with every stroke of those blades, because, you fail through, those waters are bitter cold and you know it 'cause you been livin' in 'em a long time. You don't want those waters to close over you again. "
The dialogues are really cool. K.A really has her way with words that she can create a bad-ass alpha hero even if she obviously belongs to the opposite gender. Although, I find it amusing that she created a fourteen-year-old kid who does not know the word 'tactless' and yet knew what 'chastity belt' is.
K.A really makes a great family story. I like Layne's parental beliefs, they are very reasonable and reality based. They gave many realizations to parents and those soon to be one. I always find K.A's secondary characters amusing, they make an interesting addition to the story. Colt and Cal from the previous stories in this series have been featured in this book as well.
The tactics K.A have came up with to help our hero is brilliantly made. It is fascinating to find our hero blackmail those bad guys. The reason behind it and the effort he have given to help those whom the bad guys have offended are understandable.
The ending is superb, as always with K.A. She knows how to make a romance story seem like an action-packed movie. Proving that Layne is a definite bad-ass alpha hero. Bringing justice to everyone that had been treated unfairly, an ultimate hero. Squee!
Speaking of a bad-ass alpha hero, I've been looking forward on Mike Haines' story since At Peace so I can't wait to grab and start the next book immediately. weee!!!!
